What is Twilight Wedding Photography?

As the day winds down and the sun begins to set, something truly magical happens, and it’s one of my favourite times to photograph.

Those dreamy twilight moments often produce some of the most beautiful and emotional photos from the entire day. You’re both still glowing from everything that’s happened, full of love, joy, and excitement and it really shows in the pictures. There’s an intimacy and softness in the light that brings out something truly special.

Twilight creates the perfect backdrop, it’s romantic, cinematic, and timeless. Whether the sky is glowing or the lanterns are just starting to flicker, I use that natural atmosphere to create images that feel full of emotion and connection. These are the photos couples tell me they come back to again and again, the ones that make it onto their walls and into their albums because they just feel like them.

I often get asked about my Twilight photography, it’s something many couples are drawn to, and maybe it’s what brought you here too. It’s honestly one of my favourite parts of the day to get creative. That soft golden light, often called the “golden hour,” usually appears about an hour before sunset. It gives everything a warm, glowing tone that’s perfect for relaxed, romantic portraits.

And even if the weather doesn’t play along, no dramatic sunset, a bit of drizzle, or full cloud cover,  that’s never a problem. I bring my own lighting magic and can still create bold, beautiful portraits with a dramatic edge. Whatever the weather, twilight always offers a chance to create some unforgettable memories.

So, how do those WOW twilight photos come to life? It’s a mix of experience, creativity, and a little bit of technical magic.

Over the years, I’ve trained with some of the world’s leading photographers, whilst also developed my own style, through using special lighting techniques and the natural ambient light of the scene. By carefully adding off-camera flash, I’m able to light you beautifully while keeping that dreamy atmosphere — creating images that really draw the eye and feel perfectly romantic.

On your wedding day, I’ll usually set up the perfect twilight shot ahead of time. Then, when the light is just right, I’ll whisk you away for a few minutes to capture something extra special,  without keeping you away from the party for long!

That said, twilight portraits are just the icing on the cake. What I truly love is telling the full story of your wedding day, from the big emotional moments to the quiet in-between ones. My style is natural and documentary, so I’ll be capturing the joy, laughter, and love between you, your family, and your friends as it all unfolds. The result? A set of candid, heartfelt images you’ll treasure for years to come.

I get asked a few questions a lot about Twilight photography, so let me answer some of the most common ones right now!

Is Twilight photography included in my packages? Yes! I include Twilight sessions in all of my full-day packages because I believe this creative part of the day should be available to every couple, not an extra add-on. During this session, I’ll use your wedding venue, the setting sun, or a beautiful spot on the grounds, often with fairy lights or other special touches to create those stunning images you’ve seen.

What if it’s summer and the sun sets really late? Great question! Say the sun sets at 9:30 pm, not all packages include coverage to that time, but don’t worry. Golden hour, can produce a magical light up to an hour before sunset, it’s when I capture most of those gorgeous light shots. I’m not one to rush, so if I need a little extra time to get the perfect photo, I’ll happily stay a bit longer. And if you want photos after dark, you can always opt for extended coverage to capture some truly dramatic night shots.

What happens if it rains or there’s no sunset? Weather can be unpredictable, but that won’t stop us from creating beautiful photos! If you’re up for it, we can embrace the rain, umbrellas and all, and use the lighting creatively to capture some really magical images. Sometimes those unexpected moments turn out to be the most memorable and unique photos of the day.
