History of Cave Castle
Though there may have been a fortification on this site as early as 1086, Cave Castle in its present form was built in 1875 and owned by the Barnard family until 1925. Interestingly, towards the end of World War Two, the Castle was used as an Officers Mess. Barracks within its grounds also once housed prisoners of war. Once the need for such a space was over, its new owners elegantly transformed the Castle into a spectacular Hotel – it has flourished that way ever since.
